Not illustrated. 1881 Excerpt: ...over a million of children in attendance at the national schools now, and the generation just grown to manhood had all the mental attributes required to weigh well the force of the arguments presented by the leaders in the new agitation. In the stress of the bad times petitions were made to the landlords for a reduction in the rents, but the landlords, superciliously, laughed them to scorn. The pulse of the nation was stirred as it seldom had been before, the atmosphere was charged with a spirit that would no longer brook the commission of injustice. The alarm of famine was given, but the landlord still urged his claims. The people, however, wished to keep within constitutional lines, and in mapping out the plan of the campaign it was decided that puhlic meetings should be held all over the country. At the outset the struggle was confined to Mayo, the second largest county in Connaught. The first public meeting was held in April, 1879, at Irishtown, a small place some few miles distant from Claremorris. Mounted men with green sashes, American flags, and banners with all manner of strange devices, delegations to the number of twenty thousand men, accompanied by bands of music, --such was the brilliant opening of a movement that has attracted the attention of the civilized world. This was the preamble to the resolutions: "From the China towers of Pekin to the round towers of Ireland, from the cabins of Connemara to the kraals of Kaflirland, from the wattled homes of the isles of Polynesia to the wigwams of North America, the cry is, Down with the invader, down with the tyrants.
